Reconstruction of a breast that has been removed due to cancer or other disease is one of the most rewarding surgical procedures available today. New medical techniques and devices have made it possible for surgeons to create a breast that can come close in form and appearance to matching a natural breast. Frequently, reconstruction is possible immediately following breast removal (mastectomy), so the patient wakes up with a breast mound already in place, having been spared the experience of seeing herself with no breast at all.
But bear in mind, post-mastectomy breast reconstruction is not a simple procedure. There are often many options to consider as you and your doctor explore what's best for you.

Breast reconstruction is one of the most rewarding surgical procedures performed by plastic surgeons. There are several different procedures which can be used to create the form and shape of a breast, which will closely approximate the opposite side. They will establish a more normal appearance and, more importantly, allow you to regain your self esteem. Today, breast reconstruction is usually initiated at the time of mastectomy. It may involve the creation of a breast mound entirely using your own tissue (TRAM flap) or it may involve using a tissue expander, which is a balloon placed temporarily under the chest muscle. This balloon is expanded or stretched as it is filled with saline. This stretches the skin slowly to create a pocket large enough to accommodate a permanent implant.

Breast Reconstruction: What Can Be Done?
If a woman is a good candidate for reconstruction, she can usually expect a breast mound that will fill a bra cup to her desired volume, along with a nipple and areola, if desired. The opposite breast can be made to match by augmentation, reduction or lifting. These procedures are covered by insurance, as mandated by law. In addition, significant breast symmetry as a result of lumpectomy/radiation or multiple biopsies can be corrected with reconstructive surgery.

The word "can" is used because breast reconstruction is a matter of choice. Some women choose to wear a breast prosthesis with their bra. Others may choose reconstruction, which is not limited to one's age. The overall health condition and status of the cancer are the issues that determine feasibility.

Consultation with a plastic surgeon prior to mastectomy is part of a comprehensive breast care center program. The patient should be fully informed of her options for immediate versus delayed breast reconstruction. The technique(s) recommended are based upon her anatomy, medical background and anticipated future cancer treatments.

Decision-making in breast reconstruction begins with the simple question of whether breast reconstruction will be part of the woman's recovery process.

Some women know the answer immediately; others need days or weeks to decide.

Once the decision is made to go ahead with the procedure, the next question is which technique to select. In each case, the decision is based upon surgical preference and which technique will be better in the face of any anticipated treatments of chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.

Breast reconstruction is one of the most challenging and rewarding areas of plastic surgery. Dr. Kind is one of a very few surgeons performing the deep inferior epigastric perforator or DIEP flap for breast reconstruction. This technique allows for the breast to be reconstructed with the patient's own tissues, without the loss of any muscle. Dr. Kind has been performing this procedure since 1998. Patients from all over Northern California and beyond have come to San Francisco to be treated by Dr. Kind.

If you would like to speak to or contact one of Dr. Kind's breast reconstruction (DIEP) patients, please contact Dr. Kind's office.

BREAST RECONSTRUCTION OVERVIEW
There are many techniques available to reconstruct a breast following mastectomy. All of the techniques can be performed at the time of mastectomy. This is referred to as "immediate" breast reconstruction. Immediate breast reconstruction saves the patient at least one subsequent operation, and has been shown to have a significant psychological benefit, as the patient never experiences a mastectomy defect.

Reshaping your breasts, whether by a lift, an augmentation, or a reduction, can have a powerful effect on your overall self image and confidence. Dr Mosharrafa specializes in a number of breast enhancement procedures.

Breast Augmentation - is a cosmetic procedure that uses implants to enlarge the shape of the breasts. It is designed to increase the size of small or underdeveloped breasts. Surgery can also restore and enhance your breast volume if it has decreased as a result of having children. This procedure is performed by placing the implant behind the existing breast tissue and/or the pectoral major muscle. The method of inserting your implant will depend on your anatomy and your surgeon's recommendation. The incision can be made either in the crease where the breast meets the chest, around the areola, or in the armpit. Breast augmentation can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence.

Breast Lift - raises and recontours loose, sagging breasts. You may decide you would like a breast lift because you have lost volume and tone in your breasts after having children. Another reason for having this procedure is the loss of a significant amount of weight. A breast lift improves the appearance of your breasts in several ways. It elevates your breast tissue, removes excess skin from the lower portion of your breast and the reshapes your remaining breast skin. At the same time it relocates your nipple and areola to a higher position.

Breast Reduction - or Reduction Mammaplasty is a procedure to reduce the size of large breasts and create smaller more youthful appearing breasts. Women frequently choose this operation because of back, neck and shoulder aches created by the large size of their breasts. Breast reduction can be performed at any age on a healthy woman, but it is usually recommended to wait until the breasts are fully developed. Some women decide to wait to have the surgery until their childbearing is over since childbirth and breastfeeding can cause unpredictable changes to the breasts and breast-feeding may not be possible after breast reduction surgery. The procedure removes fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola. The goal is to give a woman smaller, better-shaped breasts in proportion with the rest of her body.
